Legal documents you understand first time
Automatic adaptation of the legal language in official documents into plain language, so the recipient needs no help to understand them.
- Problem
- The administration sends legal documents as PDFs written in legal language. Certain groups cannot understand what is being communicated to them or what is expected of them, and end up needing somebody to explain it.
- Intervention
- An application that rewrites the document into natural language while preserving its legal meaning, so the recipient understands it without third-party assistance.
- Result
- 20 → 0 people in the assessed group who did not understand the document, before and after
The problem
A legal document does its legal job and fails at its communicative one. It is written to be unassailable, not to be understood. When the recipient is a citizen rather than a lawyer, the result is that the communication does not land: the person knows they have received something important and does not know what they have to do.
That is not a question of style. It is a question of access to a right.
What was done
An application that takes the original document and produces a plain-language version while preserving the legal meaning. The legal text still exists and is still the binding one; what changes is that it now comes with a version the person can actually read.
How it was measured
Across an assessed group of 20 people with difficulties understanding the original document, none retained those difficulties with the adapted version.
What it does not do
It does not replace the legal document and has no legal force: it is a reading layer on top of it. Responsibility for what the original says remains with whoever issues it.
